5Japanese sword/armor

This is an exhibition booth introducing Niigata’s nationally designated traditional crafts: Nagaoka Buddhist Altars, Sanjo Buddhist Altars, and Niigata and Shirane Buddhist Altars. Come experience the art of “gold leaf application” on Buddhist altars through hands-on activities and live demonstrations.

We create keychains by applying gold leaf to copper decorative fittings that have been hand-hammered by a metalworker.

We will be demonstrating “gold leaf application,” a technique in which ultra-thin sheets of gold leaf, approximately 0.1 μ thick, are applied one by one to the wooden surface of a Buddhist altar using lacquer.
